Google launches WhatsApp competitor Allo – with Google Assistant

Google's smart messaging app Allo is available in South Africa. Google Allo works off your phone number and is available for Android and iOS mobile devices. The app was announced at the Google I/O Developer conference in May, and was billed as a competitor to WhatsApp. Allo sports regular messaging app features, along with a preview version of Google Assistant – which integrates search functionality into the chat.

Google said this will let you find a restaurant and book a table, for example, while chatting to a friend about dinner plans. Allo also features Smart Reply, which lets you respond to messages using suggested responses based on your conversation. Send and receive indicators, emoji, custom stickers, and image sending are all standard features with Allo. “All chats are encrypted so your information is secure. It also offers an incognito mode (like in Chrome), which provides end-to-end encryption, discreet notifications, and message expiration," said Google.
